Episode 60 - Amanda Huffman: The Reality of PTSD

This week, Samantha talks with blogger and podcast host, Amanda Huffman (links to the blog and podcast can be found in the show notes). Amanda opens up and shares her story of coping with PTSD following her deployment to Afghanistan. She shares some stories about how it has affected her life and how she has learned to work through it and heal. She reminds us that there is a power in sharing our stories and that, while it may be a frightening thing, we all need to be aware and accepting of others who try to share without brushing them off. This is a great conversation that exposes some of the truths around mental health and how we should be living in community with each other so that we can all have a chance at healing. So, listen in as Samantha and Amanda "Flush It Out!"
This week, Samantha talks with Amanda Huffman, host of the podcast, "Women Of The Military" and of the blog, airmantomom.com.  Amanda shares her story of coping with PTSD and her journey from recognition to healing.  She shares a heartbreaking story that we can all relate to of reacting to triggers and yelling at her two year old son, and then explains how PTSD caused by her deployment in Afghanistan led to unhealthy habits.  Amanda reminds us that it isn't healthy to ignore the hurts we have on the inside and that our bodies can remember certain circumstances that our minds have purposefully forgotten.  She reminds us also of the power that exists from telling our stories in safe environments.

Amanda explains that since doing the work, she has moved on from taking the route of shame when she gets triggered and now talks openly with her kids about her PTSD because she knows that it is the best way for them to understand.  When somebody comes to you seeking help, Amanda explains why we shouldn't brush them off and tell them they'll be fine, and that's it's really hard to come forward and seek help in the first place.

Amanda Huffman has a passion for the stories and accomplishments of women in the military, which has led her to do what she can to give back to that community.  Her way of giving back is by providing multiple platforms to highlight and celebrate the amazing things women have done in and for the military.  You can find her podcast on your favorite podcast streaming app by searching "Women Of The Military," and her blog can be found at airmantomom.com
